How to Make Your Lion King Party Roar with Fun: Decorations, Cake, Games, and More!

If you’re planning a Lion King birthday party, the decorations are a perfect place to start bringing the magic of the Pride Lands to life. I went all in with the jungle vibe—lots of greenery, animal prints, and even some “sunrise” decorations to mimic the iconic scene where Rafiki presents Simba to the animal kingdom. I used leafy garlands draped around the tables and walls, and scattered faux animal footprints on the floor to guide the kids to different areas. A big Pride Rock backdrop for photos was a huge hit too, making the kids feel like they were stepping into the movie. For extra fun, I hung up a few Simba and Nala cutouts, along with colorful lanterns that resembled the sun and moon, to really capture the magic of the savannah. The atmosphere felt so vibrant and alive, and the kids were thrilled.

When it comes to party favors, I kept it simple but on-theme. Animal figurines were a big hit, and I threw in some mini safari animal puzzles to keep them entertained. The real showstopper was the Lion King cookies shaped like lions, zebras, and even Timon and Pumbaa. I also put together little “Pumbaa’s Bug Juice” bottles (aka fruit punch) for a fun twist, and the kids loved it. It’s those small details that make everything feel so immersive and special.

Now, let’s talk about the cake—it was absolutely everything. I had a custom cake made with a cute Lion King design—Simba’s face on top, surrounded by lush jungle greenery. It was almost too cute to cut, but of course, we did, and it tasted just as good as it looked! If you’re not into custom cakes, you can easily use lion-shaped toppers, animal figurines, or even jungle-themed cupcake toppers for a DIY version that still feels special.

For the games and activities, I had a ton of fun setting things up. One of the crowd favorites was “Pumbaa’s Bug Hunt,” where I buried little plastic bugs in a sandbox for the kids to dig up using toy shovels. They had so much fun searching for all the bugs, and it kept them entertained for ages. I also set up a “Hakuna Matata” obstacle course in the backyard. The kids had to hop like Timon, crawl like Pumbaa, and jump like Simba—everyone was giggling the whole time, and it was great exercise too! Another super fun activity was the “Simba’s Roar” contest, where the kids competed to see who could roar the loudest. It was hilarious watching them all get so into it. Plus, it gave them a chance to be silly and energetic before sitting down for cake.

To keep the fun going even after the party ended, I’m sharing some free Lion King coloring pages for the kids. You can print these out and let them color Simba, Nala, Timon, and Pumbaa while they chat about their favorite moments from the party. It’s a great way to keep them entertained and to extend the fun of the day, especially when they’re winding down.

The best part is how easy it is to make everything work together with a little creativity. So, if you’re looking for a theme that’s as fun as it is timeless, this one is definitely the way to go. And don’t forget the coloring pages—they’re a cute little bonus that the kids will love!
